This both excited me and depressed me. The Hobbit production blog is terrific, but this episode is about 3D, which interests me not one tiny bit.
“3D helps immerse you in the film,” said Peter Jackson in that video. I have seen a few 3D movies, and have not had a positive experience. It’s the opposite of immersive. It’s distracting, it looks unnatural, and adds nothing to the movie. That it’s been successfully sold as an improvement is a complete mystery to me.
The most recent (and hopefully the last) 3D film I saw was Kung-Fu Panda 2. I remember watching Kung-Fu Panda 1 (NOT in 3D) on the big screen and marveling at the crisp clear details in the animation. Kung-Fu Panda 2 (in 3D) was dark and less crisp. I assume the animation was a thing of beauty; I just couldn’t see it.
It’s remarkable how much effort these guys are putting into the 3D. It seems a shame to ignore those efforts, but given the choice I’ll be watching it in bright clear 2D without a moment’s thought.
